This is THE gingerbread recipe that Prince George will be baking this Christmas
The smell of freshly baked cookies, cinnamon and hot mulled wine – nothing beats the smells in the kitchen during the holidays. They know all about it at Kensington Palace, too!
Every year Princess Kate along with her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, bakes all kinds of goodies during the Christmas vacations. Just two years ago, Kensington Palace shared a video showing the Royal Highnesses baking cupcakes for the local community ahead of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee.
Tradition
The royals also know how to go big at Christmas! In 2019, six-year-old Prince George made a pudding batter for Christmas with his now deceased great-grandmother – a moment his father, Prince William, and grandfather, King Charles, will not soon forget. The duo got the giggles during the recording!
Royal recipe
Now the royal confectioners at Buckingham Palace are sharing the recipe for the gingerbread the kids will be baking this year! And although the baking has been approved by the Highnesses, it’s super easy to make.
Ingredients
- 1 kilogram of flour
- 14 grams of baking soda
- 28 grams of ground ginger
- 14 grams of ground cinnamon
- 335 grams unsalted butter
- 500 grams of light brown sugar
- 140 grams of eggs
- 175 grams of maple syrup (pancake syrup also works)
Instructions
- Sift the flour and spices, add the diced butter and crumble everything with your fingertips. Gradually add the sugar to the mixture.
- Add the eggs and syrup and mix until a firm dough forms. Divide it into two blocks, knead it together by hand and press it flat.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator for a few hours before rolling it out to about 5 mm thickness for the house parts and about 3 mm for smaller decorative parts.
- Cut out the shapes and place them on baking paper or silicone mat. Bake them at 165ºC until firm – 18+ min for house pieces and 12+ min for smaller pieces.
Let the pieces cool on a cooling rack. Then you can go wild with icing and other decorations! Want to make the icing yourself? Then mix 1500g sifted powdered sugar, 200g egg whites and 50g lemon juice in a bowl. That’s going to be tasty!
